Quick Facts |
|
|
One of the quickest ways to develop
leadership skills is through company sponsored leadership
development programs. These programs are often offered by some
of industry's largest corporations and are designed to take
individuals interested in developing their leadership
skills
from the beginning stage
to the more advanced levels of
leadership.
These courses usually require some form of sponsorship by a
supervisor or manager. Check with your company to see if
they
offer these type courses. |

Dear Advisor,
Where I work there are a number of
creative individuals. I’m not creative,
and more of a logical, analytical
thinker. I know these creative thinkers
work differently than I do. Since I’m
the manager of my department, I feel
compelled to step in and change the
process, one that fits my style of
thinking and management, in other words,
directing the creative thinkers to
adjust more to my style. Is this
alright?
Answer:
While it’s always important to keep
projects on target, and guidance on
timelines is perfectly acceptable, it’s
also very important to let artistic
thinkers work at a pace they are at ease
with. You’re right innovative thinkers,
like marketing staff, typically don’t
think in the same way an engineer might.
Constantly managing, or over managing,
creative people can have the reverse
effect of slowing them down, almost
certainly causing a negative impact on
completion targets. If you know ahead of
time that you will be working on a
project that will consist of primarily
creative individuals, you might want to
consider adding a cushion into
completion targets and then letting
these right brain thinkers do what they
do best: create!5/12/08 |
